Grills for preventing insects flying into open hatches left a lot of grime and corrosion. Cleaning was not going to be so simple and I thought it best to remove the grills for cleaning and storing separately. The easily accessible hatches were now more simpler to restore. I used two products. 1st, Sebesto, with a scouring pad, wiping occasionally with a cloth. 2nd, ordinary window cleaner which I applied outside. The results were good enough to flood new light into the gangway. The restored silver of the hatch frame made the cabins and the entire lower deck feel years newer. I'm reluctant to put the grills back on. But I'll clean them and restore them for berths in places where mosquitos and other insects might pose a problem.
